Special Events & Workshops

Parents may register their children for programs in person, by telephone or by filling in our online form. Please have your valid library card ready as you make your selections, and also please note that only parents may register their children.


R.E.A.D. to the Dogs @ the Library

7-8 p.m. Tuesdays, September 14, October 12, November 9 and December 14

Beginning or independent readers; registration required


Read aloud to one of the dogs from Hinsdale Humane Society’s Pet Assisted Learning program and practice one-on-one reading in a pressure-free environment. Children must be beginning or independent readers. Sign up for one 15-minute time slot.


Curiosity Day

1-2 p.m. Saturday, September 25

Meet Curious George, make a craft and celebrate the birthday of Curious George creator H. A. Rey.


Harvest Days

4:30-5:15 p.m. Tuesday, September 28

Ages 5-8; registration required


It's the time of year when farmers harvest their fall crops in preparation for winter. Join your friends at the library as we read about harvesting fall crops like winter squash, pumpkins, gourds and sunflowers. We will also create a harvest-themed craft.


Scaredy Squirrel Storytime

3:45-4:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 20

Preschool-3rd grade; registration required


Scaredy Squirrel is too scared to come to this storytime, but that shouldn’t stop you! Hear stories, design your own bandages for a special “emergency kit” and learn a thing or two about squirrels.


Diary of a Wimpy Kid Extravaganza

4:30-5:30 p.m. Thursday, October 21

We invite all Diary of a Wimpy Kid fans to a fun event at the library. Have you wondered about the sinister piece of cheese, Greg, Rowley and Rodrick? This is your opportunity to come and indulge in Greg’s world of journaling, friends, school and family.


Spooky Stories

Wednesday, October 27

4-4:30 p.m. (ages 4-8) and 4:30-5 p.m. (ages 9+)

Do you like to be spooked? Do you enjoy a good ghost story? Well, why not join Linda Gorham for stories to celebrate Halloween. Linda’s stories are sometimes funny, sometimes ghastly, and always unexpected. She has a witch’s brew of spine-tingling stories that awe, amuse and frighten audiences of all ages. Be prepared for her bonechilling voice and spellbinding stories, but watch out! You may find a smile or two hidden within. Linda will target the first half of the program for ages 4-8. The stories will be a little bit scary and a whole lot of fun. The second half will be targeted for older children (ages 9 and up).


Lego Play

Do you enjoy building with Legos and Duplos? Come to the library! We’ll provide the materials; you provide the ideas. Your creations will be displayed for your friends and family to see.


Holiday Express @ the Library

Thomas Ford Memorial Library is one of the destinations during the Christmas Walk in Western Springs. Visit the Library and have your picture taken on the train.


Chicago Wolves' Read to Succeed
Winter Reading Club

Monday, December 6 through Saturday, January 29

1st through 8th grades


Sign up for our special winter reading club for chances to earn prizes from the Chicago Wolves Professional Hockey team. Get a raffle ticket for every hour you spend reading or listening to audio books. Weekly drawings will be held every Sunday. Signup begins Monday, December 6.


Wiggleworms Holiday Music Program



4-5 p.m. Monday, December 13

Families are invited to attend a unique holiday music program at the library. Julie Helenius is a longtime Wiggleworms instructor with the Old Town School of Folk Music. She will bring elements of that program to this holiday show that is sure to be a rollicking good time for families. Come to sing along with your children, play finger games, do circle dances and play rhythm instruments especially designed for little hands.
